Joe Tait
"10 Cent Beer Night - June 4, 1974 - WWWE Broadcaster"
I sent a request to Indians broadcaster Joe Tait asking him to tell the story on a baseball about what he remembered about 10 Cent Beer Night and this is what I received:
(1) It was [a] stupid idea from the start but the Indians were
looking for anything to improve attendance. In addition to the drunks- there
were the streak-ers who increased every half inning.
(2) By the 6th inning any legitimate fans were leaving due to the fights, drunks,
and streakers. The Texas Rangers were leading 5-0 in the 9th, but Cleveland
had the bases load-ed and none out. Some guys game out on the field and one
grab-
(3) ed RF Jeff Burroughs' hat. He tried to take it back but slipped. Mgr Billy
Martin led Rangers with bats into RF and were surround-ed by drunks. Cleveland
mgr. Ken Aspromonte took his team to help Texas. The two teams fought their
way
(4) back to the 1st base dugout. Home plate umpire Nestor Chylak forfeited the
game when he found a knife in the ground next to his foot.
