"Roberto Clemente 3000th Hit 9/30/72"

I sent a request to Wayne Garrett asking him to tell the story on a baseball about his memory of Roberto Clemente's 3000th hit and this is what I got:

"I was on the commitee to choose the post of Clemente for his statue. I voted for his stance on 2nd base after the hit, but got out voted, but I'm ok with the one they chose."
"I'm so happy I was on the field that day. It was an honor to be this teammate for ten years!"
"It was great that Willie Mays came across the field to congratulate Roberto."
"The 3000th hit should have been the nite before but the official scorer called the "hit" an error."
